NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Nyerere National Park was established in 2019, making it one of the newest national parks in Tanzania. The park was previously known as Selous Game Reserve, which was named after the famous explorer Frederick Selous. In 2019, the Tanzanian government renamed the reserve in honor of the country’s founding father, Julius Nyerere.

Nyerere National Park is located in southern Tanzania, covering an area of over 30,000 square kilometers. It is the largest game reserve in Africa and one of the largest protected areas in the world. The park is home to a variety of ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, grasslands, and miombo woodlands.

Nyerere National Park is known for its incredible wildlife diversity, including over 400 species of birds, 2,000 plant species, and over 100,000 large mammals. Some of the most notable wildlife species in the park include elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, and African wild dogs. Visitors can also spot rare species such as the black rhino and the wild hunting dog.
