The Rongai Route is a less crowded and more remote trail for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Known for its beautiful wilderness and wildlife sightings, the 7-day Rongai Route provides a unique experience for climbers.
Day by Day
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
- Begin the trek at the Rongai Gate (1,950 meters) and hike through the rainforest with the possibility of encountering wildlife.
- Reach the Simba Camp (2,625 meters) for the first overnight stay.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
- Continue the ascent through the moorland, enjoying the open landscapes and unique flora.
- Arrive at the Second Cave Camp (3,450 meters) for overnight rest.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
- Trek through the alpine desert, with the stunning Kibo and Mawenzi peaks in sight.
- Reach the Kikelewa Camp (3,600 meters) for an overnight stay.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
- Proceed through a gradual and scenic ascent, passing the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn.
- Arrive at the Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 meters) for overnight rest.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – Acclimatization day
- Spend the day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp for acclimatization.
- Short hikes can be taken to aid in the acclimatization process.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
- Trek through the stark lunar landscape toward the Kibo Hut (4,750 meters), the base for the summit attempt.
- Rest and prepare for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 7: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
- Begin the summit attempt during the early hours of the morning, reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) at sunrise.
- Descend to the Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) for the final overnight stay on the mountain.
Day 8: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- Descend through the lush rainforest to the Marangu Gate.
- Receive certificates of achievement and celebrate the successful climb.
