Overview
The Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route because it is considered the easiest and most straightforward path to the summit. The route typically takes about 5 days to complete, allowing climbers to acclimatize to the high altitude gradually.
Day by Day
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- The journey begins at the Marangu Gate (1,860 meters) where climbers register and commence the hike through the rainforest.
- The day’s trek leads to the Mandara Hut (2,700 meters) where climbers spend the night.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- On the second day, climbers continue through the rainforest and into the heather moorland.
- The trek continues to the Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) where climbers rest for the night.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- The trek becomes more challenging as climbers move into the alpine desert zone.
- The day’s destination is the Kibo Hut (4,703 meters) where climbers prepare for the final ascent to the summit.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
- This is the most challenging day as climbers start the ascent to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters).
- After reaching the summit, climbers descend to the Horombo Hut for the night.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- The final day involves the descent back to the Marangu Gate.
- Climbers receive their certificates and celebrate their successful summit before departing.
